Rules for
Matrimonial Compatibility ON Matchmaking
(1) Rajju (Mangalya)(Strength and duration of Married life)
The first and foremost aspect is the compatibility of 'Rajju', Rajju denotes the strength and duration of married life.'Rajju' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'sacred Bondage'. The boy and the girl are bonded together for living as husband and wife for good. This bondage is regarded as a sacred one and therefore, is called 'Mangalya'.
The 'Rajju' is classified into five parts. Each nakshatra falls into the category of one of the above five parts. If the nakshatras of the boy and the girl fall in the same part, then the matrimonial alliance is declined outright. No reliefs or remedies are entertained to the non-compatibility.
(2)Yoni (Sexual type)
The nakshatras possess sexual organs and sexual habits of creatures. Creatures of a similar type will have greater sexual compatibility than those which are radically dissimilar and which are naturally inimical to each other. For example, a rat would not be happy if married to a cat.
In ancient days, this compatibility was a must for Shudras (manual or unskilled labourers). Considering the nature and importance of the sexual habit, this compatibility is a must to every one and no reliefs or remedies are entertained to the non-compatibility.
(3)Ganam (Species)
In ancient days, this compatibility was a must for Shatriyas( the fighter and protector of the weak, who often belonged to the ruling class) with the idea that the girls shall be married within the Shatrya Community alone.Today, the meaning of Shatrya Community is redefined.
The Nakshatras are classified into three groups on the basis of the species namely Divine Nakshatras (Devata) denoting good characters, Human Nakshatras (Manushya) denoting a mixture of good and bad characters and Demonic Nakshatras (Rakshasa) denoting only bad and wicked (diabolical) characters. If the nakshatras of the boy and the girl belong to the same species, it is highly compatible. Combination of Divine and human nakshatras are medium.other combinations are inauspicious and not compatible.
(4) Dinam (Nakshatra or Birth Star)(Health and Longevity)
This compatibility is a must for Brahmins (a scholar or teacher, learned in religious literature, acted as a Priest) Even today, the Brahmins decline outright if this compatibility is not available.
Counting is done from the nakshatra of the girl in order up to the nakshatra of the boy. 9 divide this counted number and if the remainder is 3 or 5 or 7,then both the nakshatras are not compatible to each other.
(5) "Sthiri Theergam" ( Blissful wife)
"Sthiri Theergam" indicates the death of the wife before that of the husband, especially after living a happy or satisfied married life. This is considered as auspicious and blissful for a woman.
Counting is done from the nakshatra of the girl in order up to the nakshatra of the boy. If this counted number is not less than 7,then "Sthiri Theergam" compatibility is available. If this counted number is more than 13,then "Sthiri Theergam" compatibility is excellent.
(6) Maahendram (wealth and Virtues)
This compatibility was a must for Vaishyas (a farmer, trader or craftsman) Even today; the Vaishyas prefer this compatibility as an indispensable one.
Maahendram means accumulation of wealth and Virtues. This compatibility also denotes children (issues). Counting is done from the nakshatra of the girl in order up to the nakshatra of the boy. If this counted number is 4-7-10-13-16-19-22-25,then "Maahendram" compatibility is excellent.
(7) Raashi (constellation)(Power of Attraction)
If Counting is done from the rashi (Constellation) of the girl in order up to the rashi (Constellation) of the boy and if the counted number exceeds 6 ,then "Rashi(constellation)" compatibility is excellent.
(8) Rulers of the two Rashis (Constellations)(Physical disposition)
This compatibility indicates the prosperity of the inheritants, that is to say the children. The Ruler of the raashis should not be inimical or hostile to each other.

10.Vedai (Friction)
There are certain combinations of nakshatras that do not promote marital harmony. The positions of nakshatras in the universe are in such a way that frictions occur between certain nakshatras. Therefore, such combination of nakshatras is not ideal for matrimonial purpose. The nakshatra of the girl and the nakshatra of the boy should not have inauspicious combinations of Nakshatras.
Apart from these 10 compatibilities, there are 10 other factors for comparisons and analysis, which pave the viability of the marriage.
