Code of conduct for a man
Before going for the exercises towards lessening or neutralizing the evil effects of destiny and to promote the benefic effects of destiny, one has to adhere to the following code of conduct.
(1)Man should fervently appeal to the Almighty, the Saviour of this Universe / Family deity / Ishta Devata and humbly seek HIS Grace.
Example from the Hindu Epic "MAHA BHARATHA"
The Guavas (100 brothers) and the Pandavas (5 brothers) were cousins. The Pandavas invited the Gauravas for the warming up ceremony for their newly built house and the Gauravas attended the function. Duryodana, the eldest of Gauravas mistook the shining marbles for a swimming pool consisting of water and the wife of the Pandavas, Panchali laughed at loudly. Ashamed, Duryodana, the eldest of Gauravas wanted to take vengeance on her at the appropriate time in the future.
Later, The Gauravas invited the Pandavas for a bet game and the latter agreed. The games were foul. Unaware of the evil designs, The Pndavas lost their assets, wealth, kingdom, themselves and at last they lost their wife Panchali in the game. Duryodana, the eldest of Gauravas took vengeance on Panchali by removing her saree (dress) in the prescience of everyone, including her husbands, the Pandavas. The Pandavas though enraged at this act, could not do anything since they have lost her in the game and themselves. Lord Krishna, the mentor of Pandavas and the imprint of God was a silent spectator to all these events. As soon as Panchali cried for help, calling Lord Krishna, Lord Krishna immediately swung to action. He lengthened her Saree (dress) infinitely so that Durydana and all his 99 brothers were tired of unveiling the saree and abandoned the evil idea. Questions were asked to Lord Krishna as to why He was a silent spectator till she cried for His help. Lord Krishna, the Saviour, ought to have extended His help as soon as Duryonadana started unveiling the Saree (dress). Lord Krishna told that He was also a silent spectator to the foul game played intentionally by the Gauravas against the Pandavas .The Pandavas never sought His help and assistance though He was eagerly awaiting for their invitation. Panchali also did not seek the help of Lord Krishna immediately but sought His help and assistance as a last resort, knowing crystal clear that she cannot thereafter save her modesty anymore. The Lord says," I was always ready to help her but was waiting only for her call and so, as soon as Panchali sought my help, I swung into action very swiftly"
(2) Man should repose faith in the God and leave the choice to him for benevolence.
Example Story:
There were two brothers in a village. Both were farmers. The younger brother planted saplings in his land and prayed for more rains so that the plants will grow fast. God gave more rains. Seeing more water, he asked for sunshine for the plants. God gave more sun shine. Seeing more sunshine, he asked manure. God gave him more manure. After this, he asked for mist. God gave more mist. Again he asked for rain and then sunshine. Thus every time he asked something and the God sincerely fulfilled his desire. But the saplings went rotten. The elder brother planted the saplings and handed over the job of growing them to God. He prayed to God that the God knew everything and so the God will supply water, sunshine, manure, mist, etc.as and when required and grace him with a best harvest. The benevolence of God made him reap a good harvest and he thanked the God for his kind grace.
(3)Man should pledge his full-fledged devotion in God.
Example Story:
Two men went to a temple to offer prayers. When they went to the temple, the came to know that there was some more time still left for the start of the prayers and poojas. Therefore, both went to the nearby river to catch fish. While they were busy catching fish, the temple bell rang indicating the start of the pooja. One of them immediately ran to the temple and attended the Prayers. But hid mind was not here in the temple. He was thinking as to how much fish the other man would have caught, that he ought not to have come here in the middle, etc. Thus, he was physically present but mentally absent. Whereas, the other man who was catching fish was thinking the on-going prayers and poojas in the temple and was deeply hurt that he could not attend to the same. Thus feeling, he was very sad. Here, the man who was catching fish but did not go the temple and thinking the God, devoting his entire feelings and attention to God was the true devotee for his full-fledged devotion to God.
(4)Man should obey the Divine Guidance-the Omen
Example Story:
A Prince and his associates were going to the forest for hunting. The Prince always used to take the Minister's son with him wherever he went. He was a true friend. During the course of hunting, they all took rest under a mango tree. The prince saw the mangoes in the tree and wanted to eat some of them. Therefore, his friend, the Minister's son plucked some mangoes and gave them to the Prince. The prince in his anxiety cut his fingers with knife and one finger snapped away. He cried in the pain. Everyone went to his rescue and the minister's son, his friend on seeing good omen, patiently told the Prince that the cutting of a finger was definitely a good fortune according to a divine message arrived in him by way of intuition. The Prince got angry and ordered the imprisonment of his friend, the Minister's son. The Minister's son now also told everyone that this is also for good thing. So saying, he happily went to jail. In the next time, when the Prince went to the forest for hunting, he missed all his associates and could not find the way out in the wild forest. The tribal men caught hold of him and made preparations for killing and eating him. The procedure was to put the man in the altar of Goddess Halide and then offering prayers, the man will be killed with weapons. The tribal men will bestow the human blood to the Goddess and they will take the flesh. When the preparations were going on, the prince was more or less dead. All the last rites were done and when the Prince prostrated before the Goddess, the tribal men saw one of his fingers missing and so they removed him from the altar. As per the rituals, handicapped men should be offered to the Goddess. So; the Prince was let off harmlessly. The Prince immediately remembered the words of his friend, the Minister's son and on reaching the kingdom,he at first ordered the release of his friend and apologized for what he had done to him. The friend told him that he should thank the Prince for putting him in the jail because, had he been with the prince, he would have also been caught by the tribal men and he would have been killed. That's why, he had told the prince, when he ordered imprisonment to him that the divine message was that it was for a good thing. The prince asked how he derived these type of divine messages, the friend told him that he studied the omen at the time cutting the finger and on analyzing the same, the message flowed within him as an intuition.
(5)Man should adhere to the principles of Dharma (Principles of Natural justice)
Example Story-1
A prince went to forest for hunting. When he was preparing to go to the forest, the omen was not good. There was raining when it was not a rainy season. There was windstorm and earthquake. The shooting stars looked falling down. These were considered bad omen and so the Ministers and others advised the Prince to postpone his trip to hunting. But the unrelenting Prince told everyone that he wanted to know what the bad omen will do and so, he is definitely going. He went to the forest. He was chasing a deer but could not hit it. On the way, he saw a river and went near it to drink water after putting down the arrows and arms near the riverside.Suddenly,a Tiger came out of a group of tree branches. The Prince immediately jumped to a tree for escape. But he was shocked to see a bear on the top of the tree. The bear invited him up saying that he has surrendered as a refuge and therefore, he will not do any harm to the man. Yet, the Prince hesitated. Under the tree, the tiger was standing. The bear told the prince that he can trust him and that being a refuge, as per the Principles of Dharma (Natural Justice) he should provide protection to the prince. The prince was in the middle of the tree and unable to stay for a long time, so he preferred to believe the words of the bear. The Prince came up and was in the custody of the bear. The bear asked the prince to sleep by holding his head in the thigh and the Prince did so.Now,the tiger told the bear that they both are animals and either he, the bear or the tiger should eat the man and that the animals need not follow the principles of Natural Justice. The bear was very firm in his stand. After some time, the Prince woke up and now the bear kept his head in the thighs of the man and slept. Now the tiger appealed to the man,i.e.the prince that he wanted only the flesh whether it be the man or the bear, in order to quench the hunger. and saying so, the tiger asked the Prince to push down the bear and once his hunger is over, he, the tiger can go away. Now the prince got temptation and thought that by pushing aside the bear, he can make an escape. By thinking so, the Prince pushed down the bear. Fortunately, the bear caught hold of a branch of the tree and escaped. The bear was very much upset at the attempt of the Prince but still told the Prince that even now he abided by the Principles of Dharma (Natural Justice), cursed him and went away. In the morning, after the Sunrise, the tiger fled into the forest. The Prince came down but he went mad. The evil destiny of the Prince fruitioned at once.
