Machinery of Universe
Thousands of stars are visible to the naked eye during night times. They appear as little points of light. Millions of heavenly bodies can be seen through telescope. The important heavenly bodies identified by the mankind are Stars, Planets, Comets, Meteors and asteroids. Heavenly bodies other than the Stars, Comets, Meteors, Asteroids and Satellites are called Planets. Planets revolve around the Sun and rotate themselves. There are nine Planets moving around the Sun. They are ranked in the order of distance from the Sun namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
In Astrology, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are regarded as the "Nine Planets". Scientifically speaking, the Sun is a Star, the Moon is a Satellite of Earth and Rahu and Ketu are the two points of intersection of the Lunar Orbit and Ecliptic called the" Nodes" which have no physical existence at all. The Northern Intersection is called Rahu and the Southern Intersection is called Ketu.Rahu and Ketu are put in at an equal distance and both revolve in an anti-clockwise direction. i.e. opposite to the direction of other planets. These planets follow human beings like a shadow and influence and induce them to do particular activities as per the dictations of Karma.
Physical features of Planets
The Sun-the Prime Star, has a Diameter:8,65,000 milesand about 330,000 times the mass of the Earth.The Mean Distance from the Earth:93 million miles and the Colour is White.The intensity is about 50,000 Candle Power per sq.cm. of Sun's surface and the size is about 1 lakh times as large as Earth.The direction of Rotation is from West to East.The contents of the Sun:Hydrogen, Helium, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Sulphur, Iron, Zinc,Nickel and copper in the form of gases.The Travel Period for the invisible Radiation to reach the Earth is a journey of 91 million miles
The Moon is the Earth's Satellite.It moves around the Earth.Its Linear Diameter is about 2163 miles and Angular Diameter is 300 per hour.Its Mass is 1/81 times that of Earth and the distance from Earth is 2,40,000 miles.Its Surface Temperature is Over 1500 in day time- As low as 500 in night.Its Content is:30% Iron.(1) The Moon does not shine itself. It shines in the light it receives from the Sun.The Moon reflects only 7% of the light it receives from the Sun.
The Mercury is the Smallest Planet.Its Equatorial Diameter is 3,000 miles.The Mean Distance from the Sun is 36 million miles or 39 astronaumical units.The Period of Rotation is 58.65 days (Mean Solar Units) and the Period of Revolution:88 days (Mean Solar Units).The Average Temperature is 4000 C Day/-2730C night.The direction of Rotation is from West to East.
The Venus rotate:from East to West (opposite to that of other Planets).Its Equatorial Diameter is 7,500 miles.The Mean Distance from the Sun is 67.2 million miles or 72 astronaumical units.The Period of Rotation is 243 days (Mean Solar Units) and the period of Revolution is 225 days (Mean Solar Units).The average temperature is 4000C. The Mars rotates from West to East.It has two Satellites namely Phobos and Deimos meaning Terror and Fear.Its Equatorial Diameter is 4,300 miles.The Mean Distance from the Sun is 141.7 million miles or 152 astronaumical units.The Period of Rotation is 24 h-37m-23 Y (Mean Solar Units) and the Period of Revolution:681 days (Mean Solar Units. The Average Temperature is between 650 and 100C.
Jupiter is the Largest Planet.Its Equatorial Diameter is 88,700 miles.The Mean Distance from the Sun is 483.3 million miles or 5.2 astronaumical units.The period of Rotation is 4 h -50 m-305 y (Mean Solar Units) 9h-55m-545 y and the period of Revolution is 11.86 years (Mean Solar Units).It has 13 Satellites.The average Temperature is 1400.The direction of Rotation is from West to East.
The Saturn is the Second Largest Planet.Its Equatorial Diameter is 88,700 milesThe Mean Distance from the Sun is 886.1 million miles or 9.54 astronaumical unitsThe Period of Rotation is 10 h -16 m(Mean Solar Units)10 h -38 m and the period of Revolution is 29.45years(10,759 days) (Mean Solar Units).It has 9 Satellites.The average Temperature is 1550.The direction of Rotation:From West to East.
Rahu and Ketu have no physical existence at all. The Lunar Orbit is at an angle of about 5081 to the Ecliptic and its eccentricity is 1/18.The two points of intersection of the Lunar Orbit and Ecliptic are called the Nodes. The point where the Moon crosses the Ecliptic in going north is called the "Ascending Node" .In astrolgy,it is called" Rahu" and is regarded as a Planet. The other Point where the Moon crosses the Ecliptic in going South is called the "Descending Node" In astrolgy,it is called" Ketu" and is regarded as a Planet. These Planets are also called "Shadow Planets".
The recently discovered Planets viz. Uranus in the year 1781, Neptune in the year 1846 and Pluto in the year 1930 do not find a place in the Hindu Astrology.
