Orbit of Planets
The Planets, the Agents of DESTINY, move around the Sun in an elliptical Orbit and the path of this motion is called the "Ecliptic" and this limited swath of sky within which the planets are constrained to wander is called "Zodiac".
ZODIAC
The Zodiac is divided into 12 equal segments with a length of 30o each and is called
a Constellation or Sign of the Zodiac. A Constellation is a heap of micro-zodiacs
or amshas.and is named after an imaginary figure it resembles. The 9th division
of a constellation is called 'Navamsha'. Since every portion of the zodiac
or amsha is smaller than the Constellation, they manage the Constellation by delineating
results for specific matters within a broad context of each Constellation. Navamsha is particularly useful to differentiate between two similar
horoscopes.
The Zodiac is a chain of 27 fixed Lunar stars on which
the planets tread on their path. Each Sign or Constellation within the
30o segment consists of an identifiable group of fixed Stars and the Hindus called these Stars as "Nakshatras", the Chinese called them as" Sieu", the Egyptians
called them as" Manzils" or "Lunar mansions". The 27lunar stars are Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashirsha,Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha,Purva, Phalguni, UttaraPhalguni,Hasta,,Chitra, Swathi, Vishaka, Anuradha, Jyeshtha,
Mula, Purva Ashadha, UttaraAshadha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabisha, Purva
Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revathi.
The degree of the Zodiac intersected by the Eastern Horizon at the place and time of
birth of a human being is termed as "Ascendant". The Ascendant called the" Lagna" in astrology, ties the position of planets to the place and time of birth.
Planets are strong and well placed when they occupy their own constellations.

All planets aspect the seventh constellation in which they occupy. This aspect is a full one. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn possess special aspects which is as strong as the planetary association and the seventh aspect or full aspect. Mars -4th, 7th and 8th Constellation from its position. Jupiter -5th and 9th constellation from its position. Saturn- 3rd and 10th Constellation from its position. Mutual aspects of Planets happen by association, full aspect or special aspect.
Each planet is exceptionally strong and favourable even more so than its own constellation in a sector or zone of a particular constellation, which is called 'Moola Tri Kona'.

When a planet is not exalted or debilated or in its Moola tri kona or in its own constellation, its strength is decided on the basis of the relationship between the planet and the ruler of the constellation in which it sits. The planets may be friendly, inimical or neutral towards each other.

Two planets are said to be at war when their longitudes are within one degree of each other. The planet having higher latitude is regarded as the winner and is strengthened. The loser planet is weakened.
Directional strength of a planet is much the same as the effect of exaltation. While exaltation is determined by position in a constellation, the directional strength is determined by position in a House.

The principle of Directional strength is derived from observational astrology. Jupiter and Mercury indicates intelligence and wisdom and early morning is the very best time for study and meditation. Sun and Mars are the hottest planets and show their influence at midday, the hottest part of the day. Saturn indicates shadow and darkness and shows the strength when the Sun sets. Moon and Venus are the brightest objects in the sky and strongest when it is darkest.
Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn sometimes appear to move backwards against the background of the fixed stars. This seeming backward movement is retrogression. Sometimes, planets move close to the Sun in such a way that they become visible to us. The influence of these planets becomes exceedingly weak particularly regarding the houses they own. This condition is called Combustion.
